The  Ranch style house is truly a Texas original. This 20th century style was developed because of the growth in the cattle and oil business by founder David R. Williams. He designed was based on his study of indigenous architecture of Texas. (Alexander Architectural Archives.v. "David Reichard Williams," February 2005)  The Ranch style house stretches out in length, it's close to the ground and the exterior and interior has minute decoration.

Original Ranch homes like the one above are enduring homage to the pioneer spirit of the Texas Rancher. Most were built of River rock and faced the southeast to capture breezes from the Gulf of Mexico.

This ranch style home has stone walls, and a slate wrap around porch. The interior of these homes is less formal and has an open floorplan and high vaulted ceilings with exposed beams. This ranch style has an open living area which opens to the kitchen and dining area creating a large sprawling space like the land. The beams are made of IPE brazilian wood.

Water has always been very important to the Texas Ranch house, because many were used for cattle ranching. Image titleThis 10 acre property in Manor, Texas has 2 ponds that are also stocked. Water increases the value of a property either with ponds or wells. Today, they are mostly for aesthetic purposes. Ranch houses also come in the modern variety. The one below's water feature is a serene pool flowing out from living area. Image title

The idea behind the Texas Ranch style home is to bring the outdoors in and the indoors out. Below is a outdoor gazebo which has a cozy fireplace for entertaining or just relaxing outside. Image title
