Smart Home technology is intriguing and so full of new and interesting products. These products can provide some pretty cool benefits and conveniences. Here are some that seem appealing to me:
1 – Smart color changing bulbs: There is a large variety of smart light bulbs to choose from. Many can be controlled by your cell phone, and have great standard lighting patterns: pulsating, rainbow, etc. These would be great for parties!
2- Skybell: This doorbell camera can alert you when people come to your door (whether they rind or not). It also allows you to check in whenever you want to.
3- Nest Learning Thermostat: Learns how you like the temperature and then programs itself, turns the A/C down when no one is at home, and can be controlled from your phone among other perks.
4- Robotic vacuum cleaners: Come on! Who doesn’t want someone or something else to do the cleaning. I have one and use it. You can find a variety of brands with different functions like auto programing, distance sensors, etc. They even have mopping robots!
Each person would need to decide for themselves which ones are worth the benefits they promise versus the money and time invested in them. I mean, having a doorbell camera would be great, but then wouldn’t I constantly have the urge to check in on my home. Whereas, before I wouldn’t have had that on my mind because it just wasn’t possible. So, which ones would benefit your life, and which ones might not be so necessary.
You should keep in mind, when buying, these technologies are always changing and developing. They are new. You find flaws and need to redesign, change, etc. Forbes had an article in 2013 (When ‘Smart Homes’ Get Hacked) about some of the technology then, and all the vulnerabilities it had. In that article, Kashmir Hill wrote about hacking into the homes of complete strangers and controlling appliances, lights, etc. The ability to locate these homes using the information made available through ‘smart home’ products was also mentioned. So, do your research.
