Is America Great?
I came to this country as a teenager. My parents had a vision of a better life for my brother and me and I cannot thank them enough for the choice they made.
My family emigrated from a third world country during a politically turbulent time. The years leading up to us leaving in 1980 are called the “Dirty War” because of a state of terrorism imposed by right-wing military forces. I believe our country has so much to offer but its true potential has never been achieved. Like so many others, it’s a country with countless numbers of people wishing for a better life.
I became one of the lucky ones, joining millions of immigrants in the United States of America. I've been an American citizen since 1998 and remember clearly the day I became one. Standing proud among a few hundred other immigrants, acknowledging the fact that we had made a choice and were accepting this incredible nation as our home.
This is why I voted today in one of the most controversial elections ever. An election where both candidates have the lowest approval ratings of any presidential candidates in history and our country is facing some of the worse political polarization we’ve ever seen. An election where people choosing either candidate consider themselves as voting for a “lesser evil,” and yet, we must choose one.
Who did I vote for? Who did you vote for? Everyone asks that question, but do you really want to know who your friends, relatives, co-workers and acquaintances voted for? Or would you rather not know?
In my mind, it doesn’t matter who you vote for. What I want is to know that you did vote. Voting is not only a right and a privilege, it’s also a duty, and it’s what makes this country great. So go exercise your right and use the power of your vote to help keep this country great or to make it great again—whichever view fits your own.
Don’t let others speak for you in this election! No matter how busy you are or however you may feel about the candidates, do your part to keep our democracy alive. Please go vote.
