Fabi + Rosi - the second time around.
My first visit to Fabi + Rosi was over two years ago, and I remember it being a fantastic meal, but I hadn’t been back since. So when my oldest daughter requested to go there for her birthday last week, I of course was excited to go back. She had never been before and I knew it was going to definitely be a treat for her as well.
The restaurant is a converted house nestled in the neighborhoods off of Lake Austin Boulevard, in the polished and cozy 78703. After driving through rush-hour traffic, I picked up my daughter at her work downtown and we headed to the restaurant. The quiet, tree-lined streets were a welcome change of scenery from the back to back traffic on the highway and busy downtown streets.
Walking up the outside of the restaurant is understated but tastefully decorated with hanging lights. Inside, the décor was just as I remembered it, tasteful with candles and low lighting all around for extra coziness. We were first seated at the bar in the waiting area before being moved over to our table post-appetizer.
Fabi + Rosi is “a European kitchen in the heart of Austin.” Since my daughter is vegetarian, she chose the Roasted and Pickled Beets appetizer to share. The smoked ricotta and lemon pistachio on top added creamy earthiness and a hint of tart to the already flavorful beets. If you could only taste it by looking at the picture!
Last time I was there, for our main course, I had the duck breast with the creamy polenta and Brussels sprouts, which was fantastic, but I wanted to try something new. I usually eat a plant based diet with the occasional seafood, and this time I chose the halibut. I was definitely not disappointed! It had a basil crust and came on a bed of perfectly cooked zucchini and cherry tomatoes. The fish was tender, rich, and moist, and the crust had just the right amount of crispiness to it.
My daughter went with the “Maultaschen,” or black forest mushroom ravioli. Instead of a traditional ravioli plate, there were two large raviolis with mushroom filling, which was smoky, earthy, and super flavorful. The pasta itself was al dente and had a hearty consistency. The raviolis had a small herb salad piled on top and were doused in a buttery, broth-like sauce, with a lot of the mushroom flavor but even richer and also a hint of lemon. She liked the sauce so much that we ordered a small bread basket for her to eat it with.
Overall we were so satisfied with our meals that, despite having major sweet tooths, we opted out of dessert for the evening! Last time I had the chocolate mousse and “krack” pie, which were both absolutely delicious, and for next time I will definitely have to save room for dessert.
