Austin Public Health recently reported the top 10 causes of death in Travis County. They studied mortality information over a five-year period (2010-2014).
The top 10 causes of death were, in this order: Cancer, Heart disease, Unintentional injuries (accidents), Stroke, Lung disease, Alzheimer’s disease, Suicide, Diabetes, Chronic liver disease, and Kidney disease.
It is interesting to note that several of these top causes of death can be symptoms of diabetes. We hear about sugar, and see efforts to limit high-fructose corn syrup, etc. But, do we fully understand the effects of over-eating, or inappropriately eating over a long period of time.
I enjoy reality TV. I started watching a series I found on HULU about people over 600 lbs, and their fight to regain their health and life. It blows my mind! Unbelievable! They face so many obstacles, like people around them, cravings, and pain from past hurts. They all have different stories, but ultimately it’s people who for one reason or another have lost control of their diet and in return have lost control of their lives. Most of them are at “death’s doorstep”. Let’s get serious about health. Let’s stop feeding our hurts and pains and let’s deal with them. Don’t set your kids up for failure and a life of serious health complications. Woman-up or man-up, and teach them to nurture their bodies through proper health. Set them up for success. Do it by being the example.
