Austins Newest 60 Million Dollar Carless Condo Project

A flashy, new $60 million condominium will soon be built in Downtown Austin. The 30-story tower, that will be known as "The Avenue", will sit on 8th and Congress. It will have every amenity you can think of except one, parking.

"That's ridiculous." Rudy Garcia, who is visiting Austin, said. "Why wouldn't you have parking?"

Developers said the "carless condo" will encourage it's future tenants to use other means of travel such as walking, biking, or another one of Austin's growing public transportation services.

Robert Marsh, who lives in the Woodlands, doesn't think this is a good idea.

"You're forcing people into a situation that requires the use of somebody else." Marsh said, "(They) would be relying on someone else and not yourself."

"People are going to need parking spaces regardless. Not everybody is going to use a bus, not everybody is going to use taxi's or whatever," Garcia said.

Others we spoke with feel that it would be more of an inconvenience for those trying to come home after a long week at work.

"You get home tired from work, the first thing you want to do is find your parking spot and go straight to bed." Brenda Saravia said.

Developers said the concept has worked in other cities and because of Austin's improving public transportation system, it could work here. Others don't feel the same.

"It is Texas. We are big oil. We like our cars. We drive everywhere even with these other options that we have," Marsh said.

"For a city that's trying to go green it is a positive but if it's not green yet then they need to work towards that first." Ben Saravia said. "By building bike lanes, by building stuff to make it more green."

The project is expected to take two years to complete.
