Travis Heights is, of course, one of Austin's most charming neighborhoods.Photo by Amy Bartlam
It’s a beautiful day in the neighborhood, and Austin boasts five areas that would make even Mr. Rogers want to pick up and move. That's according to apartment search website RentLingo, which created heat maps across the country to determine which local neighborhoods have the most charm.
RentLingo zeroed in on Austin's city center to come up with five neighborhoods with the most appeal. Using a 100-point system to establish charm levels, the outcome is based on things like how well-liked businesses are in the area, what types of amenities are nearby, and how expensive the neighborhood is.
The five most charming Austin neighborhoods are North Shoal Creek (78 points), Oakmont Heights (74), Travis Heights (74), North University/Campus (73), and Hyde Park (70). We should note that not all of Austin has been surveyed, and while downtown boasts loads of charm, it doesn't qualify due to a high crime rate and the fact that not many folks live in the Dirty Sixth area.
North Shoal Creek’s easy access to the greenbelt and proximity to Anderson Lane’s endless local shops and burgeoning restaurant scene contributes to its appeal. Travis Heights undoubtedly makes the charming list due to its closeness to the Lady Bird Lake Hike-and-Bike Trail as well as bustling South Congress.
The University of Texas plays a major role in upping the charm of Oakmont Heights, North University, and Hyde Park. These three ‘hoods also contain a wide range of cute cafes, parks, museums, and bookstores, making them even more attractive.
Ultimately inspired by local culture, each of these central neighborhoods offers a unique taste of Austin charm. If you’re planning a move sometime soon, reference RentLingo’s charm index heat map before you settle on your next neighborhood.

"We moved to the Austin area in early 2017 and Violet was instrumental in helping us find our first home. She was readily available to show us neighborhoods and homes as well as taking our calls and answering questions. She helped us throughout the entire process and always had resources & statistics for us to review. My husband is a finance guy -- so he appreciated having numbers to analyze as well as home-price comparisons between neighborhoods. She was attentive to our preferences and made great efforts to satisfy each one.
We were both new to Austin and to the process of buying a new home, after having rented for numerous years. Violet is very knowledgeable as to the process of buying a home and we didn't have any uncertainty about what to expect or what was next. Violet is also a great resource as to each neighborhood including details as to the schools, shopping & community.
She is extremely thoughtful and caring! For instance once we closed & moved, she helped us find a table for our kitchen.
We have recommended Violet to our family and friends. Now that we are settled into our new home & neighborhood, we sort of miss our weekend house-hunting adventures with Violet!"
